Fellowships for Advanced Doctoral Students (FADS)
The American Research Center in Sofia (ARCS), Bulgaria, with the support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation (ABF), invites applications for Fellowships for Advanced Doctoral Students (FADS) affiliated with accredited Bulgarian institutions.
Program Description:
This program will support one-month research related to the topic of the applicant’s dissertation at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens or the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT), Istanbul and Ankara Centers. Research projects in any field of archaeology or history are eligible. Holders of the fellowship will be required to participate in the ARCS - FADS seminar October - December 2012.
The Fellowship includes accommodation in Athens, Istanbul or Ankara for one month, travel expenses, a meal allowance, and a daily allowance (to be used for personal expenses and expenses related to research, such as photocopying). Travel must be completed by June 30, 2012.
Eligibility Requirements:
The applicants must be Bulgarian doctoral students in accredited Bulgarian universities or research institutes. Although preference will be given to advanced doctoral students who are within the required limit of their program, others, who are in the process of completing their dissertation, are also encouraged to apply. English proficiency is required. Knowledge of modern Greek or Turkish is an advantage. Although priority will be given to applicants who have never held a FADS fellowship, previous FADS fellowship recipients are encouraged to reapply.
Application Materials:
A complete application consists of: the ARCS - FADS application form, available at the bottom of this webpage; a project description (not to exceed three double-spaced pages); a current cv; two letters of recommendation. One letter of recommendation must be written by the applicant’s advisor or the department’s chair in the institution of affiliation.
Application Submission:
All application materials must be in English. These materials must be emailed to Professor Denver Graninger (graninger.arcs@gmail.com), Director of ARCS, by January 15, 2012. Hard copy submissions will not be accepted. Review of applications to begin immediately. Finalists will be notified in late December and will be interviewed at ARCS in January.
