Institution: American School of Classical Studies at Athens

The main task of the proposed research is to examine the consecutive stages in the formation and development of the minor prophetic gods. When did they appear and how did they come to concentrate these prophetic features into themselves? Did they have their own worship and where were their oracles situated if they had those prophetic places? Secondly, it is necessary to study the connection, between minor prophetic divinities and the classical divination gods, Zeus and Apollo. Following that path, we would get the real picture of divination and its aspects, and its role and influence on the religious life of the ancient Greeks.
