ARCS Fellowships for US-based graduate and advanced undergraduate students

ELIGIBILITY
Graduate and advanced undergraduate students enrolled at North American academic institutions (or academic institutions accredited in North America) engaged in research in any field of the humanities and social sciences with a focus on Bulgaria or the Balkan peninsula.
THE PROGRAM
The Fellowships are of 9-month (September-May) or 3-month (September-November or February-April) duration. Graduate students are eligible for both 9- and 3-month Fellowships; advanced undergraduate students are eligible for 3-month Fellowships. In addition to independent research, Fellows will participate in the academic program of ARCS which includes a lecture series, seminars, and excursions designed to provide a broad thematic vision of Bulgarian and Balkan history and culture from prehistory to the present.
THE FELLOWSHIPS
Fellows receive a monthly cash stipend ($600/month), housing in Bulgaria, language instruction, and up to $1,000 for travel expenses between North America and Bulgaria. Moreover, travel expenses within the academic program are covered by ARCS. This Fellowship can be combined with another Fellowship; however, you must notify ARCS and we will negotiate the terms of the ARCS Fellowship. We strongly encourage you to inquire in timely manner about possibilities for funding from your home institution and to indicate this in your application.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
An application consists of a completed application form (available below); a project proposal describing how participation in the ARCS academic program will serve your research interests (not to exceed five double-spaced pages); a current CV; academic transcripts; and two letters of reference from scholars familiar with your work (to be sent separately via email). For full consideration, these materials must be submitted by email to the ARCS Fellowship Committee at apo@arcsofia.org by January 31, 2013. ARCS expects to notify applicants of the decision of the Fellowship Committee by March 1, 2013.

*** Undergraduate students have the option to be given an examination and write a term paper at the end of the program if they need to receive credits for the program from their home institutions. ARCS does not grant credit, but can issue certificates of participation, and the students' home institutions can then confer credits based on the students' examinations and term papers.
