It is of the utmost importance to develop a responsible social appreciation for the past. Communication between archaeologists, and social outreach to the general public, are necessary for an ethical reconstruction of the distant past. The fairly nascent increase in interest in Balkan archaeology carries with it many important implications for the establishment of a pan-Balkan discourse. It is in everyone's interest - locally, continentally, and internationally - to subdue looting activities in the region, and to promote an understanding of the Balkan past that inspires people. Fostering such appreciation is not an easy task and will require the open collaboration of both local and foreign archaeologists.
