The aim of this project is to shed light on the complex process through which the patriarchate in Constantinople succeeded to preserve and even enhance its authority despite the political disintegration of the state which had created, nurtured and protected it throughout the centuries. As Byzantine temporal power was dwindling, Byzantine influence and reputation in the spiritual realm was on the rise.
