This project compares three hagiographies of Irenaeus of Sirmium (Greek, Latin, Old Church Slavonic), or, more precisely, a narrative that was written, rewritten and translated into various languages, as well as transformed from language to language. The analysis of these texts will tell of rewriting and translating processes that occurred in Western Europe, Byzantium and in Bulgaria in the Middle Ages. This research will additionally seek to contextualize the manuscripts, the centers of their production and their use. Finally, the conclusion on the interrupted "remembering the saint" is to be made; how did certain communities remember Irenaeus? Special attention will be paid to the medieval versus the modern use of this saint, and towards drawing possible parallels between the past and the present in the case of this revived sainthood.
