This research project has two major themes:

1. To collect and classify all finds from the Chalcolithic in Bulgaria which may be interpreted as weapons – stone mace heads, battle axes of stone, copper and antler, projectile points of flint, bone and copper, “sling-shots” of stone and clay. Most of these artifacts have not yet been published;

2. To analyze the questions posed by these artifacts, particularly the function of these artifacts.

The project will clarify the appearance of these artifacts and their spread in different cultures, and then situate them against the background of other data like fortifications around Chalcolithic settlements and evidence of skeletal trauma; and so will provide the opportunity to ascertain the existence of warfare in the Chalcolithic.
