The main goal of this project is to define the changes that occurred in the urban patterns in Bulgarian lands after the end of the 14th c. While accomplishing that task, one must set criteria for the classification of towns and correlate written and archaeological data in reconstructing the urban landscape from the point of view of planning, architecture, social and ethnic context. By settling these problems, this research will provide a description of the characteristics of the towns in the Bulgarian lands in terms of urban planning and architecture with respect to the general and specific features of the provincial towns in the Ottoman Empire.
