ABF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Archaeology at the Field Museum in Chicago (POSTDOC)

Online application portal: http://grants.fieldmuseum.org/. Please refer to the tutorial at the bottom of the page to help you through the online application process. The submission deadline is December 1, 2013.

Program Description

The POSTDOC program is intended for scholars who have recently obtained their Ph.D. in archaeology or bioarchaeology and who are interested in conducting postdoctoral research while in residence at The Field Museum in Chicago, IL. The program strongly encourages proposals from researchers interested in employing and developing innovative analytical techniques that will advance the scientific study of the human past. The fellowship supplies a salary, benefits, and a small research stipend for one academic year (9 months).

During the course of the fellowship, the Fellow will have the opportunity to implement and carry out his/her postdoctoral research, which should result in major publications, while also working with the Anthropology collections in conjunction with the curators at The Field Museum. The ABF Postdoctoral Fellow in Archaeology is expected to assist the ABF Archaeological Advancement Program at The Field Museum in facilitating the funding process of international collaborative archaeological and bioarchaeological research in Eastern Europe and Bulgarian archaeological sites, museum preservation, and conservation.

The ideal candidate will be a Bulgarian native who has obtained his/her Ph.D. within the last ten years and who plans to continue with academic research in Bulgaria. Because the main goal of this program is to enhance the archaeological infrastructure in Bulgaria, priority will be given to Bulgarian applicants who are likely to return to an academic position in their home country upon completion of the fellowship. Non-Bulgarian scholars with research interests in Bulgaria and in the Balkan region are also invited to apply. Especially welcome are proposals that seek to take advantage of the various resources and facilities available at The Field Museum and elsewhere in the Chicagoland area. The fellowship provides a salary of $40,000 per academic year plus benefits, as well as an additional $2,000 for research and moving expenses.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate that all requirements for the Ph.D., including filing of the dissertation, will be completed prior to the beginning of the fellowship. Advanced proficiency in English must also be demonstrated.

Reporting Requirements

Acceptance of funding carries an obligation to provide reports on project accomplishments, as well as an account of the expenditure of grant funds. In addition to a final report that will be due upon completion, a mid-term progress report will also be due during the tenure of the fellowship. More frequent reporting may be required for some projects. Any publications or press releases resulting from the research should be sent to the Postdoctoral Fellowship Coordinator. All projects funded through this program are required to acknowledge ARCS and ABF in presentations and publications that derive from the research.
