Apollonia Pontica plays a key role not only as major political and economic colonial center in the Pontic region, but also as a representative center producing a rich collection of Greek painted pottery (probably the largest in the Black Sea Region). A thorough research of the materials from Apollonia Pontica will cast light on the represented groups of vessels, repertoire and iconographic schemes in its entirety, as a complex. Such a study will furnish a good basis to trace out the specifics of the center (like the preferences and distribution) in comparison to the available information from other regions of the Greek world and particularly the Northern Black sea region. An analysis of that type would be a valuable contribution to the thorough understanding of the diversity of the late Classical ceramic complex as a demonstration of the increasing importance of the local centers in the formation of the trends, if not of the pottery production itself.
