Тhe history of the Knights Hospitaller in Rhodes (1306 – 1523) has been represented as a part of the history of the crusade movement and therefore has been a subject of increased interest by the scholars of  the Late Crusades. For the medievalists the development of the Order of St. John in that period has been no less interesting as an organic part of the history of the Latin States in the Levant. But even now medieval studies lacks a separate scientific monograph dealing with the stay of the order in Rhodes, connected to its meaning in the context of the history of the Balkan medieval states. The position of the territorial possessions of the Knights Hospitaller involved them in Balkan politics through the XIV – XVth Centuries. During that fateful period the Balkans turned into a borderland between civilizations – a zone of intensified contacts between East and West, between Islam and Christianity.
