The research project is inspired by the studies of the French scientist Jean-Pierre Sodini which deal with the liturgical fittings and fixtures in the early Christian churches in the western part of the Balkans (dioceses Dacia, Macedonia and Achaia). Even though Sodini didn’t perform a full and detailed study of the existing archaeological materials, he evoked important questions about the shaping of the church interior as a result of the local liturgical traditions. There is currently no complete and profound research of the Early Christian liturgical fittings and fixtures for the eastern part of the Balkans. The project is of particular interest because of the existence of rich and varied archaeological materials that could create a good picture of the liturgical traditions in the diocese Tharcia; and also because of the opportunity to explore the influence of Constantinople and Rome on such a contact zone as the Balkan Peninsula.
