The project is based on a study of stylistic and iconographical features of a specific group of Late Classical painted pottery from Apollonia Pontica, much of it discovered during archaeological excavations in recent years. Despite different opinions on defining the scope of the term Kerch Style, it is generally acknowledged that it represents the last peak in red-figure vase-painting. This research area raises a number of questions concerning chronology of the late ceramic series and the appearance of certain trends in the figural decoration of the vases. In addition, 4th century production of fine ware shows increasing evidence of different workshops outside the so far undisputed center Athens. At present, there is no compelling proof of red-figured vases being manufactured in the Black Sea region, although such assumptions exist in the historiography on the Kerch Style vases. In this respect, the study of the examples from Apollonia could offer first insights into the situation at this important Western Pontic center. Furthermore, the archaeological context of vases from Apollonia could help specifying the date of certain Late Classical groups.
